Saturday 11:00 am The Drum Solo with Aliyah Sahar

Difficulty: Intermediate

Drum solos are my favorite and I have been teaching them for many years, but I have been searching for another amazing drum solo piece for several years now and I finally found another one!! In this workshop students will be learning an AMAZING drum solo choreography to a RAK'in drum solo that has numerous rhythm changes and exciting dynamics. While learning the choreography we will be discussing drum solo patterns and rhythm transitions and how the choreography works to incorporate these. Come ready to have fun and take home a crowd pleasing drum solo that you can perform in it's original format or change up with ideas of your own. (The instructor will provide music, choreography notes and will let students film the choreography for their own person use.)

Katie began dancing in 2009 after living in China for 5 years. Wanting something fun to do, she quickly fell in love with the music and movement of Middle Eastern dance. Studying primarily with Cassandra Shore and Aliyah Sahar, she is now mentored by Turkish master dancer Azad Kaan, teaches and performs locally, and travels extensively to continue her education. She is an apprentice in Jawaahir Dance Company and also dances with the Blue Lotus Middle Eastern Dancers. She will be hosting Azad Kaan in Minneapolis in November 2019. www.katiesahar.com

Shaabi (Arabic for 'of the people') is a social dance from Egypt's urban areas that has a loose, earthy, and playful feel. Starting with a quick 10 minute chat while we warm up about what shaabi is (and what it isn't) then heading straight into an action packed class where we explore various aspects of this genre that have been brought from the streets of Cairo to the belly dance stage. We will learn fun, upbeat moves and combinations, including a few drills to get those shimmies loose and juicy. We will be very bouncy, dance sneakers can be worn but not necessary.
